FastDNS short-circuits the DNS lookup process when connecting to a hostname address (such as www.softpedia.com) Whenever a connection attempt is made using a hostname address, you must first convert that hostname address into an IP address before the connection is made.

By using the built in hosts index provided by Microsoft Windows, when a connection attempt is made to a hostname address it first checks this index for the IP. If it doesn't exist in the hosts index, a DNS lookup process is initiated. This process can slow down the connection between you and the host by up to several seconds, especially if the network is busy.
